Gold Hallmarking Charges Rise, Raising Fears of Fake Stamps and Fraudulent Sales
Times of India · business
GJC has flagged a potential rise in fraudulent gold sales following an increase in hallmarking charges from Rs 45 to Rs 75. This higher cost, particularly concerning for tier-2 and tier-3 cities with lower consumer awareness, may encourage unscrupulous jewellers to use fake stamps. The GJC noted that only about 10% of districts have adequate awareness of the BIS app for verifying hallmarking.
