North Bengal Tea Estates Significantly Reduce Razor Wire Fencing in Elephant Corridors
The Better India · lifestyle
Conservation efforts in North Bengal's Dooars region have led to a substantial decrease in razor-wire fencing around tea estates. Initially, sharp fencing posed a severe threat to elephants, causing injuries and deaths, and forcing them to alter traditional routes. This change followed extensive stakeholder engagement, including meetings with tea estate management, local communities, and government agencies. A reassessment between 2019 and 2026 revealed a 74.2% reduction in razor-wire fencing, from approximately 134.7 km to 34.8 km. This initiative aims to make elephant movement safer and reduce human-wildlife conflict.
