The Supreme Court has observed that forced temperance is not a solution for alcoholism, citing Gujarat's strict prohibition policy. Despite this, the state has witnessed over 600 deaths in more than 10 major hooch tragedies since its formation. Justice J.B. Pardiwala noted that a total ban on alcohol drives the trade underground, leading to unregulated, lethal brews. The court highlighted five 'evils' of prohibition, including loss of revenue and corruption.

सुप्रीम कोर्ट ने गुजरात की शराबबंदी नीति पर सवाल उठाते हुए कहा है कि जबरन शराब छुड़ाना इसका हल नहीं है। गुजरात में शराबबंदी के बावजूद, राज्य बनने के बाद से 10 से ज़्यादा बड़ी जहरीली शराब की घटनाओं में 600 से ज़्यादा मौतें हो चुकी हैं। जस्टिस जे.बी. पारदीवाला ने कहा कि शराब पर पूरी तरह रोक लगाने से यह धंधा अवैध हो जाता है, जिससे ज़हरीली शराब बनती है।
