New Seahorse Species Discovered in Indian Waters

Scientists have identified a new seahorse species, Hippocampus amandavincentae, from the Indian Ocean, based on two specimens collected from trawler bycatch in Tamil Nadu. This discovery resolves over a century of taxonomic misidentification, revealing that the thorny seahorse, previously thought to be a single species (Hippocampus histrix), is actually three distinct species. The findings contribute to a clearer understanding of seahorse diversity in the Indo-Pacific region, which is crucial as indiscriminate fishing and illegal trade threaten seahorse populations globally.

वैज्ञानिकों ने हिंद महासागर से समुद्री घोड़े की एक नई प्रजाति, Hippocampus amandavincentae की पहचान की है। यह तमिलनाडु में ट्रॉलरों द्वारा पकड़ी गई दो मछलियों के नमूनों के आधार पर किया गया है। इस खोज से सौ साल से चली आ रही टैक्सोनॉमी की गलत पहचान दूर हो गई है। पहले जिसे कांटेदार समुद्री घोड़ा (Hippocampus histrix) की एक ही प्रजाति माना जाता था, वह असल में तीन अलग-अलग प्रजातियां हैं। यह खोज इंडो-पैसिफिक क्षेत्र में समुद्री घोड़ों की विविधता को समझने में मदद करती है, जो कि अंधाधुंध मछली पकड़ने और अवैध व्यापार से खतरे में हैं।
