Transmission Delays, Not Excess Capacity, Cause RE Curtailment: MNRE Secy

New and Renewable Energy Secretary Santosh Kumar Sarangi stated that transmission infrastructure delays, not an oversupply of renewable energy capacity, are the primary reason for renewable power curtailment. He explained that renewable capacity is developed against identified demand, and curtailment occurs when transmission lines are not ready to evacuate the generated power. Sarangi emphasized that expediting transmission line completion and increasing battery energy storage are crucial solutions. He noted that battery storage can significantly improve transmission infrastructure utilization, especially in solar-heavy regions, by allowing stored power evacuation during off-peak hours.
