Nearly Half of India's Medical Colleges Fail NMC Disability Unit Directive

Times of India · education

Almost half of India's medical colleges, 44.5%, have not established the mandatory Enabling Units for students with disabilities, as directed by the National Medical Commission. Out of 798 colleges, 355 are non-compliant. Alarmingly, some institutions have appointed unqualified staff like sanitation inspectors or clerks as points of contact, raising concerns about their ability to provide necessary accommodations and support. This non-compliance follows a Supreme Court order from August 2026, with the court warning of serious action against defaulting colleges.
