India is reassessing its Quality Control Orders (QCOs) to ensure they improve quality without hindering manufacturing scale and competitiveness. Concerns over these orders as non-tariff barriers were raised by major trading partners at the WTO. The number of products under QCOs grew significantly post-2019 but has since slowed, with some revoked due to supply chain concerns. A new order allows temporary sourcing from alternative suppliers for eligible firms facing certification issues.
