SC Seeks Explanation On UPI Charges Above ₹2,000

The Supreme Court has asked the Centre to explain the legal basis for imposing charges on UPI transactions exceeding ₹2,000 made to merchants. A bench refused to halt the new framework, set to begin on October 15. The government stated that 96% of transactions would remain unaffected and the charges are a settlement fee, not a tax. The court questioned the executive basis for the levy and issued notices to the Centre, RBI, and NPCI.

सुप्रीम कोर्ट ने केंद्र से ₹2,000 से ज़्यादा के मर्चेंट UPI ट्रांज़ैक्शन पर चार्ज लगाने के कानूनी आधार के बारे में पूछा है। एक बेंच ने 15 अक्टूबर से शुरू होने वाले नए ढांचे पर रोक लगाने से इनकार कर दिया। सरकार ने कहा कि 96% ट्रांज़ैक्शन अप्रभावित रहेंगे और ये चार्ज टैक्स नहीं, बल्कि सेटलमेंट फीस हैं। कोर्ट ने इस लेवी के लिए कार्यकारी आधार पर सवाल उठाया और केंद्र, RBI और NPCI को नोटिस जारी किया।
