Striped Sheets Reduce Seabird Collisions by 2.8 Times, Study Finds

Times of India · science

Researchers in Canada have discovered that patterned surfaces can significantly reduce bird collisions with illuminated structures at night. Experiments conducted in 2024 and 2025 on Bon Portage Island found that vertically striped sheets resulted in 2.8 times fewer collisions compared to plain sheets. This finding is crucial for protecting vulnerable seabird species like the Leach's Storm-Petrel, which are often disoriented by artificial lights. The study offers a practical solution for coastal facilities needing to maintain lighting while mitigating risks to avian wildlife.
