Tanzania's main opposition leader, Tundu Lissu, has been convicted of inciting treason over remarks made during a campaign for electoral reforms. The 58-year-old Chadema party leader was acquitted of the more serious charge of treason itself, which can carry the death penalty. Lissu has consistently denied the charges, calling the prosecution politically motivated and arguing his statements were part of a legitimate campaign for constitutional changes. He has leave to appeal the conviction at the country's highest court.
