Artificial Fabric Cover Reduces Melting on Chinese Glacier
Times of India - India · india
Scientists have found that covering a section of China's Dagu Glacier with artificial fabric can significantly slow ice melt. A study published in Remote Sensing revealed that a 500-square-metre patch of non-woven geotextile reduced melting by 15% over one year. Initially, the fabric decreased melting by 27% in the first two months, preserving approximately 178 cubic metres of ice. However, its effectiveness waned over time, with a later two-month period showing only an 8% reduction, attributed to decreased reflectivity. The high cost and difficult access limit its wider application.
