Madras HC Questions MLAs Resigning For Re-election

The Madras High Court has described the practice of MLAs resigning to switch parties and seek re-election as a "mockery of democracy" that insults voters. The court noted this occurs without existing guidelines and urged the Election Commission to consider framing rules. A public interest litigation highlighted the cost to taxpayers for by-elections caused by such resignations. The court was hearing a plea concerning two former AIADMK MLAs who joined the ruling.
