12 Snowshoe Hares Released in 1959 Eradicated After Destroying Island Forests

Hindustan Times · environment

In 1959, two fishermen released 12 snowshoe hares on a Canadian island hoping to create a trapping resource. The hares rapidly multiplied, spreading to neighboring islands and severely hindering tree growth by continuously grazing on young saplings. This ecological disruption persisted for nearly five decades, with repeated attempts needed to eradicate the invasive population. The last hare was finally trapped in 2007, ending a long struggle to restore the island's forests which had been significantly impacted by the unchecked browsing.
