Nagpur Administration Bans New Borewells Amidst Falling Water Table

Times of India · environment

Nagpur district administration has imposed a complete ban on digging new borewells and deepening existing ones across urban and rural areas due to a sharp decline in groundwater levels and low reservoir storage. District Collector Kumar Ashirwad issued the order under the Disaster Management Act, 2005, effective immediately. The ban applies to private individuals, farmers, builders, industries, and contractors, with exemptions only for government projects aimed at tackling drinking water scarcity. Sub-divisional officers will oversee enforcement, with violations leading to legal action under the Disaster Management Act.
