Times of India · business
Disney reportedly structured its deal with AI startup Character.AI to acquire its technology and employees through Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings. This arrangement allows Disney to obtain a license for Character.AI's tech and hire most of its staff, including the former CEO, while leaving the startup responsible for its existing lawsuits and investigations. Character.AI, which was losing $8-9 million monthly, filed for bankruptcy on October 12. The deal structure, involving a $5.5 million payment and a $2 million deposit, aims to shield Disney from the startup's significant legal and regulatory risks.
