Panic has gripped parts of Ernakulam district following a series of lightning strikes with the onset of the northeast monsoon. Ten houses were damaged in Vengola, a girl sustained burn injuries, and a mosque minaret was damaged in Karumalloor. Climate experts identify Kottayam, Idukki, Pathanamthitta, and hilly areas of Ernakulam as lightning hotspots. Studies indicate increasing lightning intensity, prompting calls for enhanced protection infrastructure. The District Disaster Management Authority plans more awareness drives to ensure public safety.
