Tamil Nadu to Cut Costly Power Purchases As Rain Reduces Demand by 1,000MW
Times of India · business
Tamil Nadu is set to reduce expensive open-market power purchases following a 1,000MW drop in electricity demand due to the northeast monsoon. The state government aims to ensure uninterrupted supply while recalibrating its procurement strategy. Electricity minister C T R Nirmal Kumar reviewed demand, procurement costs, and generation capacity. The state had previously signed agreements to buy 3,500MW at high prices, drawing criticism. Officials will now adjust purchases based on rainfall and demand, particularly during evening peak hours, to avoid buying costly electricity when demand is low.
