UPI Merchant Fees to Raise Costs for Some Businesses, Survey Shows

A new survey indicates that India's planned merchant discount rates (MDR) on select UPI transactions will introduce new costs for some businesses, though most payments will remain free. The Pahlé India Foundation report found 25% of merchants expect to pay over ₹5,000 monthly, while 58% anticipate paying ₹1,000 or less. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) deferred the levy, originally set for October 15, until after Diwali. While over 95% of UPI payments will remain free, the MDR aims to cover processing fees for digital transactions above ₹2,000.
