Lok Sabha Seat Increase Proposal Fails Constitutional Test

A proposal to increase Lok Sabha seats from 543 to around 850 was brought before Parliament. While 298 members voted in favour and 230 against, the proposal did not pass. This is because amending the constitution requires a two-thirds majority of present members, not just a simple majority. With 528 members present, 352 votes were needed, but the government only secured 298, falling short by 54 votes. This ensures stability for fundamental laws.

लोकसभा सीटों को 543 से बढ़ाकर लगभग 850 करने का प्रस्ताव संसद में आया था। इस पर 298 सदस्यों ने हाँ में और 230 ने ना में वोट दिया, लेकिन यह प्रस्ताव पास नहीं हुआ। ऐसा इसलिए हुआ क्योंकि संविधान संशोधन के लिए सिर्फ साधारण बहुमत नहीं, बल्कि मौजूद सदस्यों के दो-तिहाई बहुमत की ज़रूरत होती है। 528 सदस्य मौजूद थे, जिसके लिए 352 वोटों की ज़रूरत थी, पर सरकार को सिर्फ 298 वोट मिले, जो 54 वोटों से कम रह गए।
