Indian Rice Exporters Ship 102,210 Tonnes Basmati Rice to Iraq
Times of India · business
Indian rice exporters have arranged shipments of 102,210 metric tonnes of Basmati rice to Iraq across three bulk vessels. This initiative aims to significantly cut freight costs by approximately 74%, from $350 per tonne to around $90 per tonne, due to current shipping disruptions and rising logistics expenses. One vessel has already reached Iraq's Umm Qasr port and begun unloading. This move is crucial as the Middle East accounts for about 70% of India's Basmati exports, impacting competitiveness and profit margins.
