Gujarat Govt Defends Non-Veg Ban Near Somnath Temple
Business Standard · india
The Gujarat government has defended its ban on non-vegetarian food within a 500-meter radius of the Somnath Temple, arguing that the religious and cultural significance of the pilgrimage site outweighs the right to conduct business. The government told the High Court that Somnath is not merely a commercial town but a sacred destination for millions. It cited similar restrictions in other pilgrimage towns like Rishikesh and Haridwar. The ban, imposed two months ago, is being challenged by six restaurant owners who claim it violates their fundamental right to trade.
