Madras High Court Quashes Money Laundering Case Against Ex-DMK Minister Ponmudy

The Madras High Court has quashed money laundering proceedings against former DMK Minister K. Ponmudy, his son Gowtham Sigamani, and five others. The Directorate of Enforcement (ED) had initiated these proceedings based on a ₹28.37-crore red sand quarrying case. The court's decision came after all seven individuals were acquitted from the original sand quarrying case on April 2, 2026. The High Court ruled that PMLA proceedings cannot continue if the predicate offence, which forms the basis of the money laundering charge, is dismissed.

मद्रास हाईकोर्ट ने पूर्व DMK मंत्री के. पोनमुडी, उनके बेटे गौतम सिगामणि और पांच अन्य के खिलाफ मनी लॉन्ड्रिंग की कार्यवाही रद्द कर दी है। प्रवर्तन निदेशालय (ED) ने ₹28.37 करोड़ के लाल रेत खनन मामले के आधार पर यह कार्यवाही शुरू की थी। अदालत का यह फैसला सभी सात लोगों के मूल रेत खनन मामले में 2 अप्रैल, 2026 को बरी होने के बाद आया। हाईकोर्ट ने फैसला सुनाया कि यदि मनी लॉन्ड्रिंग चार्ज का आधार बनने वाला प्रेडिकेट ऑफेंस (मूल अपराध) खारिज कर दिया जाता है, तो PMLA की कार्यवाही जारी नहीं रह सकती।
