California Pipeline Removal Allows Salmon Return

A 70-year barrier blocking migratory fish in California's Alameda Creek has been removed. Crews relocated a Pacific Gas & Electric natural-gas pipeline, burying it deep beneath the creek bed near Sunol. This action eliminated an 8-foot drop, reopening over 20 miles of upstream habitat. Biologists recently spotted two Chinook salmon beyond the former barrier, marking the first documented access to this part of the watershed since the 1950s.
