RBI Drains Excess Liquidity But Also Injects Funds
Economic Times · business
The Reserve Bank of India has significantly reduced banking system liquidity from a peak surplus of ₹11 lakh crore to ₹48,303 crore in six weeks. This was achieved through temporary variable rate reverse repo auctions, sell-buy swaps, and increasing the daily cash reserve ratio to 99%. These measures aimed to align money-market conditions with the RBI's calibrated tightening stance and control inflation. However, the liquidity drain pushed overnight rates above the repo rate, prompting the RBI to temporarily inject funds via variable rate repo operations to prevent sharp increases.
