The Khemkaran Sector in Punjab, characterized by its flat terrain and extensive irrigation canals, played a crucial role in the Indian Army's defence during the 1965 war. The natural slope of the land, from northeast to southwest, shaped cultivation and movement, with three principal canals, Upper Bari Doab Canal, Kasur Branch, and Sobraon Branch, irrigating the area. These water bodies, along with the Beas and Sutlej rivers, effectively canalized the landscape. The strategic positioning of these features helped the army secure the Punjab plains against enemy advances.
