India, Liberia Launch Sailors' Safety Body

India and Liberia have established a Group of Friends on the Safety and Security of Shipping and Seafarers. Foreign Minister S Jaishankar stated at the inaugural meeting on the UNGA margins that actions disrupting maritime commerce and causing loss of life are indefensible. The group includes major ship-owning states, countries with large ship registries, and those providing the most seafarers. Jaishankar emphasized the need for stronger international cooperation to deter attacks on civilian shipping, referencing PM Modi's proposal for a Seafarers Emergency Support Network.
