Supreme Court Declines to Interfere in Orissa HC Reprieve for Ex-Minister

The Supreme Court has dismissed a special leave petition challenging an Orissa High Court order that quashed proceedings against former BJD minister Pratap Jena in the Mahanga double murder case. The High Court had previously stated that the magistrate's order taking cognisance of offences against Jena was unsustainable and without jurisdiction. The SLP was filed by the son of one of the victims, who was killed along with an associate in January 2021. The Supreme Court bench stated they were not inclined to interfere with the High Court's judgment.

सुप्रीम कोर्ट ने ओडिशा हाई कोर्ट के उस आदेश को चुनौती देने वाली विशेष अनुमति याचिका खारिज कर दी है, जिसने महांगा दोहरे हत्याकांड मामले में पूर्व BJD मंत्री प्रताप जेना के खिलाफ कार्यवाही रद्द कर दी थी। हाई कोर्ट ने पहले कहा था कि जेना के खिलाफ अपराधों का संज्ञान लेने वाले मजिस्ट्रेट का आदेश अस्थिर और अधिकार क्षेत्र से बाहर था। यह SLP जनवरी 2021 में मारे गए पीड़ितों में से एक के बेटे ने दायर की थी, जिसकी हत्या एक सहयोगी के साथ हुई थी। सुप्रीम कोर्ट की बेंच ने कहा कि वे हाई कोर्ट के फैसले में दखल देने के इच्छुक नहीं थे।
