Renowned historian Romila Thapar has stated that the Hindutva interpretation of Indian history is built upon colonial understandings. Speaking at the Second Sitaram Yechury Memorial Lecture, the 96-year-old scholar argued that colonial historians simplified complex social and political processes into religious narratives. Thapar noted that colonial scholars viewed India through a lens of "Oriental despotism," portraying Asian societies as static. She suggested that greater attention to physical evidence like inscriptions, rather than solely religious texts, could have led to different historical interpretations.
