Banks have refuted fugitive businessman Vijay Mallya's claim that he has repaid his full loan amount. A consortium led by the State Bank of India stated in an affidavit to the Bombay High Court that approximately ₹8,752 crore is still outstanding as of August 2026. While banks have recovered around ₹10,270 crore through recovery officers and other means, they argue this does not settle the entire debt. Mallya had petitioned to quash criminal proceedings, asserting banks recovered more than the principal loan amount.
