Al Jazeera · world

An armed group aligned with the Ethiopian government claims it is close to achieving full control of the Tigray region. The commander of the Tigray Peace Forces (TPF) announced on social media that Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) forces have been defeated. This claim, unverified by Al Jazeera, follows renewed fighting in September after the collapse of a 2022 peace deal. Residents reported Ethiopian government forces advancing towards the regional capital, Mekelle, while the TPLF acknowledged federal forces occupied some areas but vowed to counter-attack.
