Rumble Strips Cut Rural Intersection Crashes By 32% In US Study

Times of India · automobile

A Federal Highway Administration experiment from 2007-2008 tested rumble strips at rural intersection approaches in five states. The treatment, designed to slow drivers without reconstruction, was applied to eight sites. Post-implementation analysis revealed a significant 32% reduction in total accidents and a 34% decrease in fatal or injury crashes. This approach addresses the high risk posed by unsignalized rural intersections, where 37% of fatal intersection accidents occur. The rumble strips created a narrower driving corridor, prompting drivers to reduce speed before reaching the intersection.
