A hoard of 2,584 Norman-era silver pennies, discovered by seven detectorists in a Somerset field in 2019, has been acquired for the nation at £4.3 million. The South West Heritage Trust secured the coins, known as the Chew Valley Hoard, after a five-year process. Dating from 1066-1068, the coins offer evidence of unrest following the Norman Conquest. The find's value is split between the landowner and the detectorists, with the National Lottery.
