Supreme Court Questions Validity Of 2-Child Norm For Polls Amid Falling TFR

Times of India · politics

The Supreme Court has questioned the relevance of population control laws, including the two-child norm for contesting elections, citing a significant fall in TFR to 1.9, below the replacement level of 2.1. The court observed that the foundation of such laws has crumbled and they have become counter-productive. It decided to review its 2003 verdict upholding disqualification for those with more than two children from contesting local body polls.
