Native Australian Mammals Return to Outback After 100 Years Due to Conservation Effort
Times of India · environment
Ecologists Rebecca West and Reece Pedler have successfully reintroduced six native mammal species to Sturt National Park in New South Wales, Australia. After moving to a remote station in 2017, they established predator-proof enclosures covering 4,000 hectares, removing rabbits, cats, and foxes. Species like bilbies, bandicoots, and bettongs, absent for over a century, are now breeding within and beyond these protected areas. This initiative, known as Wild Deserts, aims to restore ecological balance by reintroducing animals crucial to the desert ecosystem's health.
