Tasmanian Devils Thrive, Penguin Colony Vanishes

Tasmanian devils introduced to Maria Island in 2012 to protect the species from disease have multiplied from 28 to 90. However, their success has coincided with the disappearance of a little penguin colony that once numbered 3,000 breeding pairs. Conservationists had warned of this risk, citing historical precedents of predators devastating island wildlife. The Tasmanian government states the devil population is managed to mitigate ecological impact.
