Uttar Pradesh District Sees 67% Drop In Stubble Burning Incidents

Hindustan Times · environment

Shahjahanpur district in Uttar Pradesh has achieved a remarkable 67% reduction in stubble-burning incidents since 2021. This success contrasts with approaches in other states like Punjab, where farmers face penalties and criminalisation. The district administration collaborated closely with farmers, holding village meetings to discuss health risks and concerns, fostering joint solutions. Market-based approaches were also tested, with incentives and subsidised machinery like industrial balers encouraging stubble removal. This collaborative model offers a promising alternative to punitive measures for tackling crop residue burning.
