Somerset Family's 150-Year-Old Broad Bean Joins National Heritage Seed Collection

A broad bean variety, known as Grandfather Bean, cultivated by the same Somerset family since 1875, has been officially added to Garden Organic’s Heritage Seed Library. This heirloom has been passed down through generations of the Burge family for approximately 150 years. The inclusion in the national collection highlights the importance of individual growers in preserving unique and threatened vegetable varieties. This initiative aims to safeguard agricultural heritage that might otherwise be lost to commercialisation.
