LIC Retiree Wins Tax Relief on Leave Encashment After 1,277-Day Delay

Times of India - Business · business

A retired Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) employee received Rs 9.04 lakh as leave encashment but initially faced a tax notice. The Income Tax Department limited her exemption to Rs 3 lakh, as LIC employees are considered non-government for this purpose. She approached the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT) Jaipur after a significant delay of 1,277 days, attributing it to her former tax consultant's negligence. The ITAT condoned the delay, acknowledging that taxpayers should not suffer due to consultant errors, and granted her relief.
