IISc Flags Flaws in Swachh Vayu Rankings, Calls for Overhaul

Times of India · environment

The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) has identified significant flaws in the Swachh Vayu Sarvekshan, the Centre's air quality ranking system. Researchers argue the current methodology overemphasizes procedural compliance and self-reported data, failing to reflect actual air quality experienced by citizens. They noted that highly ranked cities sometimes show poor air quality, indicating a disconnect between scores and environmental outcomes. The IISc team has recommended redesigning the framework to better measure pollution reduction and public health impact.
