Saturn Reaches Opposition Tonight, Offering View of Seeliger Effect

Hindustan Times · science

Saturn will be at opposition on October 4, making it the closest and most visible it will be all year. This celestial event, where Earth passes between the Sun and Saturn, allows the ringed planet to be seen for most of the night. Observers can also witness the Seeliger effect, or opposition surge, which causes Saturn's rings to appear brighter. This phenomenon occurs due to the unique alignment of the Sun, rings, and Earth, reducing shadows cast by ring particles.
