Retired Aircraft Submerged in Maldives to Become Artificial Reef
Times of India · environment
Two retired Dornier 228 aircraft, formerly of Air Maldives, have been submerged near Kudagiri Island in the Maldives to create a unique diving attraction and artificial reef. The project, initiated in 2025, aims to combine aviation history with marine conservation efforts. In May 2026, conservation teams attached coral fragments to the wrecks, marking a new phase in transforming them into a developing marine habitat. This initiative seeks to diversify marine tourism while restoring coral ecosystems.
