India's Trade Deficit With China Driven By Non-Tariff Barriers
Business Standard · business
Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman expressed concerns over India's exponentially growing trade deficit with China. She highlighted that non-tariff barriers, rather than high tariffs, are limiting Indian companies' market access in China. Phytosanitary rules, for instance, restrict imports of Indian generic drugs, bovine products, and vegetables. This limited access to the large Chinese market poses a significant challenge for these Indian sectors. Meanwhile, imports of Chinese goods, especially electronics, continue to increase rapidly in India.
