Contrary to popular belief, common household items can be significantly dirtier than a toilet seat. A study by NSF International found kitchens to be the filthiest area in homes. Kitchen sponges are particularly alarming, harbouring billions of bacterial cells and fecal bacteria. Other surprising culprits include kitchen sinks, cutting boards, coffee maker reservoirs, and reusable grocery bags, all of which can accumulate harmful bacteria and mould due to constant use and damp conditions.
