Canada to indefinitely ban euthanasia for mental illness alone

The Guardian · world

Canada's federal government will introduce legislation to indefinitely prevent individuals whose sole health condition is mental illness from accessing euthanasia. This move aims to address a significant debate within the country regarding eligibility for medical assistance in dying (Maid). While current rules already bar such individuals, a temporary exclusion was set to expire. Justice Minister Sean Fraser stated the upcoming legislation reflects the government's considered approach, acknowledging the lack of complete consensus on the sensitive issue.
