Fastest US Ocean Liner SS United States To Become World's Largest Artificial Reef

The SS United States, once the fastest US ocean liner and a vessel that carried presidents and celebrities, is set to become the world's largest artificial reef. After decades of uncertainty, the 990-foot ship will be sunk off Florida's Gulf Coast in November 2026. Okaloosa County purchased the ship to create a marine habitat and a new attraction for divers and anglers. The vessel, which set a transatlantic speed record in 1952, was designed by William Francis Gibbs and funded partly by the US government.
