Tree-of-Heaven, Introduced in 1784, Now Spreads Widely Across North America

Hindustan Times · environment

The tree-of-heaven, native to China, was first introduced to Pennsylvania in 1784 as an ornamental plant. It has since spread from Maine to southern California, infesting hundreds of acres of forest. This fast-growing tree reproduces rapidly through wind-dispersed seeds and root sprouting, making it difficult to control. It thrives in disturbed areas like urban alleys and roadsides, and can even inhibit the growth of other plants. A fungus, Verticillium wilt, has shown potential as a control agent.
