This operation follows months of the RBI absorbing surplus liquidity, which had reached record highs due to inflows aimed at defending the rupee. Interbank borrowing costs have risen recently after the RBI increased rates and signalled further tightening due to rising inflation. The central bank infused ₹1 trillion through a seven-day variable rate repo, attracting bids exceeding ₹1.5 trillion.
