US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has encouraged Reliance Industries in Gujarat to refine more Venezuelan crude oil. This request stems from current global conflicts driving up oil prices and pump rates. A fundamental factor is the variation in crude oil types, with Venezuela possessing significant heavy, sour crude reserves. Refineries are specifically designed to process certain grades of crude, and processing heavier, higher-sulfur oil requires specialized equipment. Lighter, lower-sulfur crude typically commands a premium and is processed by simpler refineries.
