Northeast India Records 26% Rainfall Deficit During 2026 Monsoon
Times of India · environment
The eight northeastern states of India experienced a 26% deficit in rainfall during the 2026 Southwest Monsoon, which lasted from June to September. Meghalaya faced the highest deficit at 60%, followed by Manipur (46%), Arunachal Pradesh (44%), and Assam (28%). Mizoram and Tripura also recorded deficits of 19% and 16% respectively, though Sikkim and Nagaland saw slight increases. This rainfall deficit has raised significant concerns for agriculture, particularly in Manipur, where farming activities are already impacted by ongoing ethnic conflict.
