Guam Kingfishers Return After Snake Devastation

The Guam Kingfisher, or 'sihek', is extinct in the wild due to invasive brown tree snakes. These birds are crucial for controlling insect populations, and their absence has led to increased spiders and thinner forests on Guam. Conservation centers house the remaining 140 birds, with four new chicks born recently.

गुआम किंगफिशर, जिसे 'सिहेक' भी कहते हैं, अब गुआम में जंगली नहीं रहे। इसकी वजह है वहां फैली भूरी पेड़ की सांपों की प्रजाति। ये पक्षी कीड़ों को कंट्रोल करने में बहुत ज़रूरी थे। इनके न होने से गुआम में मकड़ियां बढ़ गई हैं और जंगल भी पतले हो गए हैं। अभी 140 पक्षी कंजर्वेशन सेंटरों में हैं, जिनमें से चार नए चूज़े हाल ही में पैदा हुए हैं।
